With nearly 500 years to hone its personality San Juan is a wonderful mélange of contradictions: historic yet modern, exotic yet familiar, energetic yet laid back. Puerto Rico's vibrant capital preserves the island's Spanish heritage in its colonial neighborhoods. The cobblestone streets of Old San Juan, or the ‘Old City’, teem with restaurants and shops and a large concentration of art galleries and museums.
Fantastic sounds and dreamlike sights reside around every corner. Pulsating salsa in Calle San Sebastián and the ground-shaking thunder of Atlantic tide exploding against the sturdy 500-year-old fortifications of El Morro.
Not to be outdone, New San Juan has its charms as well, including the grand architecture in Santurce and Miramar, the pristine beaches of Ocean Park and Isla Verde, where glorious sunsets wash away the last of the decadent nightlife revelers.
